Name: Intra Uterine Stem Pessary

Description: 14 K gold filled pessary, 1 inch in diameter, 2.5 inches long, gold filling marked but no makers name. The ends of about l.24 inches are gold tipped wires which open up into uterine cavity. Stem with circular guard fits in cervix. Part of the history of contraception, this type of pessary was used to prevent the entry of sperm into the uterine cavity. The Dittrich Museum has an extensive exhibit devoted to this subject tracing developments up through modern times.
