Name: Spintharyscope, Crooks

Description: Crooks spinthariscope. Brass tube with lens to view screen at end. Circular wheel adjusts needle dipped in radium to change distance of activity from screen and change the rate of detected scintillations. The screen is coated with zinc sulfide to flash when an alpha particle hits it. Crook used this to measure the charge of the alpha particle. It was adopted to use as a parlor game where people watched the flashes of events with a device designed form the home. Glew, a radiation martyr from London designed one of ivory.
