Category: Pre 19th Century Instruments
Estimated Date: 1800
Name: Mortar and Pestle, Brass
Manufacturer: Contratta, Palermo

Description: Bronze mortar and pestle, mortar is 4” diameter, 3” high. The Pestle is 7.5” long. Both are stressed but appear probably to be late l9th or early 20th century copies. Copies of old mortars are extremely common. They are very had to date without some type of provenance. They should be approached with caution as to authenticity. The situation is made more complicated by the fact that they were used in many situations throughout the ages, so being commonly encountered does not either prove or disprove age.
