Estimated Date: 1880
Name: Surgeons Field Kit
Manufacturer: Codman and Shurtleff
Description: Mixed set contains silver male and female catheter, blunt probe, cutting probe, needle with trocar, 4 lancets with tortoise handles, marked Walth and Co., Boston, and Codman on others, and a curved fistula type lancet with lock marked Charriere. Also a scissor unmarked, These mixed sets are always problematic. The question that is difficult to resolve is whether the physician over time replaced missing or broken items with other manufacturers. or even bought a mixed set, versus deliberate adulteration by sellers trying to create the impression of a complete unit. The small wallet sets were a regular part of the physician’s armamentarium when house-calls were an integral part of practice.
