Description: This grouping includes a number of quack remedies from around the turn of the century including: Improved Cathartic Pills (2 1/8” x 7/8”), St Bernard vegetable pills (2 1/4” x 1“d), .Pape Diuretic (3 1/4” x 1“d), Celery and Iron (2 3/4” 1“d) with wrapper, Arbolone (3 3/4” x 1 1/4“d), Red Pills (3” x 1 3/8“d), Chases Blood Nerve Tablets (3” x 1 1/8“d), Nyal’s Celery and Iron Pills (2 1/2” x 1 1/8“d) and St Bernard Vegetable Pills (1 7/8” x 7/8”)..These are nice examples of this type of packaging. An interesting feature of the Pape Diuretic pills is the statement around the cap that reads: “Guaranteed by the Distributers, The Pape, Thompson and Pape Co.,Cincinnati O,Under the pure food and drugs act, June 30,1906. Serial No.1901”. This was undoubtedly an add on after the act was passed and is a nice example of the attempts of these remedies to take advantage of this legislation that was meant to protect the public to their advantage.
